The redevelopment project for the “Luciano Manara” Barracks in Bologna aims to enhance and repurpose an important historic military complex located in a strategic area of the city. The intervention includes a comprehensive reorganization of the site and an energy-efficient, functional upgrade of the existing buildings, with the goal of bringing together various operational and logistical branches of the Law Enforcement under one unified headquarters.
The works involve structural restoration and consolidation, upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and fire-safety systems, and improved energy performance through new climate-control solutions and the integration of renewable-energy technologies. Outdoor areas are also redesigned, introducing new access roads, training spaces, and parking facilities. The project has been developed according to stringent environmental-sustainability criteria, fully aligned with CAM requirements and the DNSH principle, with a strong focus on reducing consumption and improving the quality of working environments.
From an architectural standpoint, the intervention preserves the historic identity of the barracks, restoring its original typological features while integrating contemporary elements that are both compatible and reversible. The Manara Barracks thus becomes a model for the regeneration of public assets — a project that harmonizes efficiency, safety, and architectural value, returning to the city a functional, forward-looking, and emblematic complex.
