The project for seismic improvement, energy efficiency, and functional adaptation of the Juvenile Penal Institute “Piero Siciliani” is a complex intervention straddling the restoration of historic buildings and the refunctionalization of sensitive structures in one of Italy’s most famous historic centers.

Due to the function of the Institute, the development of the project required considerable attention to the correct choice of construction technologies that define the intervention, as well as to the standards required by the administration for the creation of such spaces. The project is therefore characterized by the choice of the most modern technologies in the construction field and comprehensive sustainability, managing to adapt the 15th-century structures to current regulatory requirements for seismic response of buildings in the event of an earthquake.

With simple interventions such as replacing fixtures and upgrading systems, the building complex also achieves good energy efficiency, a goal that is not so easily achieved for Italy’s historic building heritage.
